MANAGEMENT RESTRUCTURING SEES NEW APPOINTMENTS AT ABP’S EAST ANGLIAN PORTS In order to consolidate the management of Associated British Ports’ (ABP) East Anglian Ports, Robert Smith has been appointed Port Manager for the Ports of Ipswich, King’s Lynn and Lowestoft. Until now, two Port Managers have served the region, but the three ports have now been united, to run as a single business unit. Robert, 49, will remain based at the Port of Ipswich, where he has served as Port Manager for the past three years. He joined the Company in 1971 as a clerk at ABP’s Port of Hull, and has held a number of senior managerial positions before being appointed to his current post. He is married with two children and currently sits on the boards of Harwich Haven Authority Suffolk Development Agency and Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, and is a council member for the East of England CBI. A newly appointed Deputy Port Manager, Paul Jervis, and a newly appointed Assistant Port Manager, Mike Sellers, will support Robert in the administration of the newly-formed business unit. Paul, 35, will be predominantly based at the Port of King’s Lynn. He joined ABP in 1985 as a clerk at ABP’s Port of Grimsby, and subsequently held a number of important managerial positions. These include Terminal Manager for Humber International Terminal at ABP’s Port of Immingham and Assistant Port Manager for ABP Ipswich. Mike, 34, will now be responsible primarily for the day-to-day administration of the Port of Ipswich and Lowestoft. He joined ABP 12 years ago as a Port Operative for ABP stevedoring subsidiary Northern Cargo Services, rising to the position of Port Operations Manager for the Port of Lowestoft, a job he held for two years before taking up his new appointment. Commenting on the changes, John Fitzgerald, ABP’s newly appointed Short-Sea Ports Director, said: “These are interesting times for our East Anglian ports. We have seen a number of important developments in recent times, such as the opening of Lowestoft Haven Marina and the current construction work on a new ro-ro berth at the Port of Ipswich. Each port has its own distinct qualities, but through their proximity to one another, it has become clear that, in order to continue to develop and win new customers, they must be run as a single business unit. Robert Smith, along with Paul Jervis and Mike Sellers, bring to their new roles considerable experience and great local knowledge. I have every confidence they will lead the ports to an even brighter future.” 27th September 2004
