ABP BARROW WELCOMES WISE GODDESS OF THE WAVES Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Barrow received a cruise call from Swan Hellenic's* new vessel, Minerva II, on Wednesday, 1 September. Named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, the 180-m long, 30,277-tonne vessel is the largest cruise ship ever to call at Barrow. Minerva II’s 570 passengers were given a lively welcome to the port by a brass band and street entertainers, and a spectacular fireworks display was held on the dockside in the evening to mark the occasion. Steven Young, ABP Port Manager, Barrow & Silloth, said: “The Port of Barrow, with its easy access to the Lake District, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for cruise vessels.Last year, the port received calls from two luxury cruise vessels, Black Prince and Arion. We were particularly delighted to welcome Minerva II to Barrow and extended to her passengers our warmest greetings. “ABP has been working hard with local partners – including the Cumbria Tourist Board – to promote Barrow as the gateway for cruise ships to the Lake District.Current regeneration plans at Barrow include the possible development of a new cruise terminal at the port on the Walney Channel.” Minerva II departed from the Port of Barrow at midnight on 1 September.2nd September 2004
