GOOD FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR FOR ABP’S PORTS OF HULL & GOOLE It has been a good start to the year for Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Ports of Hull & Goole, with the ports handling increased volumes of container, roll-on/roll-off traffic and coal imports. Commenting on the ports’ success, Douglas Morrison, ABP Port Director, Hull & Goole, said: “There have been a number of developments at Hull & Goole – two of the UK’s leading foreign-trading ports – during the first half of the year.Both ports benefit from our policy of working with quality customers on the back of long-term agreements.”Hull At Hull, new terminals for North Sea Lumber’s timber imports from the Russian Federation, and Rix Shipping’s liner service to the Baltic states, became operational in March and May, respectively.ABP invested a total of £1.4 million in the new facilities, which were built on the back of 10-year customer agreements. Marshall Maritime Services (MMS), a private shipping company which started using Hull last year following a 10-year agreement with ABP, is expanding its business at the port.ABP is developing outdoor storage areas for MMS, representing a £1.1 million investment.The first phase of this project became operational in July. Goole At Goole, ABP is investing £0.9 million in extending South Dock Terminals’ storage facilities, on the back of a new term agreement with the company.South Dock Terminals currently operates a 1,900 sq m warehouse at Goole, handling imports of steel, timber and a variety of bulk cargoes.ABP is creating an additional 5,100 sq m of warehousing for South Dock Terminals to handle additional imports of steel and bulk products.The new undercover storage facilities are scheduled to be operational by the end of September this year. ABP has also developed a new £0.3 million storage facility for RMS Europe, with whom ABP has a 10-year deal.As operators of Boothferry Terminal, RMS handles vessels from Germany and Denmark, servicing the Seawheel trade in containers. RMS has extended its commitment to the port as a result of increased volumes of conventional traffic. 1st September 2004
