WAKEFORD TRUST PRAISES MARITIME STUDENT

In a special ceremony held onboard Queen Mary 2 (QM2) recently, Jo Cox, Warsash Maritime College student, was presented with the 2004 Wakeford Prize in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the maritime industry.The award was presented by Maldwin Drummond, President of the Wakeford Maritime Lectures Trust.

Jo, aged 25, who studied as Deck Officer Cadetship at Warsash Maritime College, received the Wakeford Prize, together with a cash gift of £500.Since leaving the maritime college, Jo has become a Third Officer on British Antarctic Survey vessel.

Maldwin Drummond, President, Wakeford Maritime Lectures Trust, said:

“The Wakeford Trust is delighted to be able to present Jo with her well-earned prize, particularly in such excellent surroundings as the bridge of QM2!It is great to see people, like Jo, having such a keen interest in the shipping industry.”

Jimmy Chestnutt, Chairman, Wakeford Maritime Lectures Trust and Harbour Master & Deputy Port Manager, ABP Southampton, added:

“The Wakeford Prize is an integral part of the Trust’s work.I am delighted that we are able to support such a deserving and enthusiastic student as Jo.I wish her every success in her maritime career.”

A delighted Jo said:

“I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the Wakeford Trust. It is a great honour and privilege to receive this award and the recognition that accompanies it.I have always wanted to work in the shipping industry and I have now found a job that I thoroughly enjoy.”

The Wakeford Maritime Lectures Trust is named after the late Captain George Whalley Wakeford, Director of the then-University School of Navigation (now Warsash Maritime College) from 1935 – 1971.The Trust, which is supported by Associated British Ports (ABP), owners and operators of the Port of Southampton, not only organises annual lectures on maritime matters but also promotes developments in the port and shipping industries.
