DIGNITARIES VISIT ABP’S PORT OF SILLOTH

The Port of Silloth recently played host to Elliot Morley, MP, Minister of State for the Environment and Agri-Environment, and Tony Cunningham, MP for Allerdale and Parliamentary and Private Secretary to Elliot Morley.

The two visitors were given a tour of Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Silloth by the port’s Harbour Master & Port Superintendent, Captain Chris Puxley.

Tony Cunningham said of the visit:

“It was an extremely useful visit. The Minister, in particular, was keen to see the work of the port first-hand.The more freight that is carried by sea the better, and I will do whatever I can through my work in Parliament to promote the use of our ports.”

Chris Puxley commented:

“This was an excellent opportunity to show Elliot Morley and Tony Cunningham what we do at the port. ABP Silloth is an important North-Cumbrian facility for coastal and short-sea shipping. Two of our most important customers – Carr’s Milling Industries and Prime Molasses – have both received Freight Facility Grants from the Government for developing facilities at Silloth which enable goods to be shipped through the port, rather than delivered by road. This has the environmental benefit of reducing lorry journeys and emissions of carbon-dioxide.”
