PORT RECEIVES SAFETY SUCCESS AWARD FOR EIGHTH YEAR RUNNING Associated British Ports (ABP), owner and operator of the Port of Southampton, has scooped a top UK safety award for the eighth consecutive year. The port, which is one of the largest and busiest in the UK, had to pass a gruelling test to satisfy the British Safety Council's awards panel that the port has lower than average accident rates, sound safety policies and plans, and a strong board-level commitment to health and safety. The prestigious award was presented to Hanif Brora, ABP Group Security Co-ordinator and Head of Safety for ABP Southampton, by David Ballard, Director General of the British Safety Council. The Port of Southampton was chosen from a number of small- to large-sized, private- and public-sector enterprises all over the country. Andrew Kent, ABP Port Director, Southampton, said: "ABP’s Port of Southampton is one of the busiest and most diverse cargo ports in the UK, for whom health and safety are of paramount importance. We are delighted to have won this award again this year and will continue to work at improving our health and safety standards and performance." David Ballard congratulated the winners, saying: "The National Safety Awards highlight organisations that reach the top levels of health and safety. They are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards.” 23rd June 2004
