AMBASSADORIAL VISIT HIGHLIGHTS STRONG TRADING LINKS BETWEEN PORT OF IPSWICH AND BALTIC STATES
The strong trading links between Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Ipswich and the Baltic states were highlighted following an inspection of its facilities by a trio of Baltic Ambassadors. As part of their visit, their Excellencies Aurimas Taurantas of Lithuania, Kaja Tael of Estonia and Janis Dripe of Latvia also enjoyed a lunchtime reception at the port’s Waterfront Conference Centre. Ipswich’s Mayor, Councillor Penny Breakwell, local MP Chris Mole and many local business leaders joined the dignitaries at the function.

ABP Port Manager Robert Smith expressed his delight at the Ambassadors’ interest in the port’s activities. Speaking at the conclusion of the visit, Mr. Smith said:

“Trade between our countries dates back centuries and Ipswich’s location favours trade with Europe and the Baltic states. The total volume of imports from the Baltic states handled at ABP Ipswich – including forest products, agribulks and the now firmly established unit load Kursiu Linija - topped 250,000 tonnes in 2002. With Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania set to join the EU in 2004, there is every expectation these volumes will grow.”
