NEW CRANE GRABS EXPORT TRAFFIC
Associated British Ports (ABP) is set to invest over three-quarters of a million pounds in a new quayside crane providing a state-of-the art facility to support steel export traffic through its South Wales ports.

An £800,000, 37-tonne capacity, Liebherr mobile harbour crane is on order from Austria following a new three-year agreement between ABP South Wales and Corus. The crane, which will be located at Newport, will complement ABP’s existing fleet of quayside and mobile harbour crane and provide a significant improvement in flexibility and crane capacity at Newport.

Both ABP Newport and ABP Swansea have been handling steel traffic for Corus for more than 40 years and this new contract is a logical step forward, explained Budha Majumdar, ABP Port Director, South Wales Ports.

Dr Mark Carr, Managing Director, Corus Strip Products UK, said:

“The agreement with ABP underpins our drive for a robust and competitive supply chain.”

In addition to the acquisition of the new mobile harbour crane, ABP will also be tailoring the port’s operational systems at both Newport and Swansea to support Corus’s export requirements.
