PORT’S CRANE GIVEN A RIDE
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of King’s Lynn was recently the scene of a rather spectacular departure, when the port’s Liebherr crane set off on a journey around the British coast, destined for its new home at ABP’s Port of Newport.

The Herculean task to move the 190-tonne crane from its former location on Riverside Quay to the barge moored on the Bentinck Dock, surprisingly took little more than a working day. Involving lengthy preparation, the complex operation was planned by Liebherr, the crane’s manufacturers, and was executed by Osprey Shipping Ltd, a company which specialises in marine-based, heavy-lift transportation and project freight-forwarding.

After being loaded onto the barge, the crane was towed to Newport by tugboat in a journey that was completed in just over three days.

Nick Ridehalgh, Port Manager, ABP King’s Lynn, bid farewell to the crane.

“Considering the complexity of the operation, I’ve been extremely pleased with how smoothly it ran. The fact that such an undertaking passed without a hitch is a great testament to the skill of Osprey’s specialist staff and the excellent co-operation between ABP and Osprey personnel.”
