BACKBONE OF STEEL STRENGTHENS PORT TRADE
The Spanish steel giant, Grupo Celsa – the new owners of the former Allied Steel & Wire (ASW) Castle and Tremorfa steel works in Cardiff – has begun importing steel products through Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Cardiff, restoring a
long-standing relationship between the steel mill and the port that has historically handled large volumes of export and domestic-bound steel products for the mill.

The first shipment of 5,000 tonnes of steel beams arrived at the port from Barcelona onboard m.v. Delfborg recently.

With its first dedicated steel plant in the UK, Celsa, who previously imported steel products into the country through various UK ports, will now be able to consolidate the majority of its import requirements through ABP Cardiff.

Kim Marti, Commercial Manager, Celsa UK, said:

“This facility in Cardiff – a first for Celsa in the UK – will provide the ideal location from which to grow and expand our UK markets. We are confident that steel volumes will grow once again through the steel mill, reinforcing Cardiff’s long-held reputation as a major steel-production area.”

Clive Thomas, Deputy Port Manager, South Wales Ports, said:

“This new business is particularly significant for ABP Cardiff. We know we have the experience and facilities to handle large volumes of steel and look forward to working closely with Celsa to satisfy their requirements for the longer term.”

He added:

“This first shipment of steel construction beams will also, quite literally, strengthen the backbone of the Port of Cardiff’s steel-handling trade, coming after the recent announcements that investments totalling £1.7m will be made at the port following two new agreements with other port customers for bespoke steel terminals.”
