PRESS STATEMENT - EMPLOYMENT APPEAL TRIBUNAL
In March this year, the Employment Tribunal dismissed claims by some members of Humber Pilots Ltd (HPL) that they were employees of Associated British Ports (ABP). Those members have now decided to withdraw their application to the Employment Appeal Tribunal regarding this decision.

ABP has always maintained that, as a consequence of the company’s arrangements with HPL since the introduction of the 1987 Pilotage Act, members of HPL were self-employed, and we are pleased that the issue has now finally been resolved.

As Competent Harbour Authority with responsibility for pilotage on the Humber Estuary, ABP has been running a pilotage service on the Humber – with directly-employed pilots – since HPL withdrew its services in December 2001.
