RECORD CARGO AT PORT OF SILLOTH
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Silloth recently welcomed the 2,323-tonne tanker, British Shield, which discharged 3,214 tonnes of molasses at the port – the largest bulk-liquid cargo ever received at Silloth docks and the third largest cargo of any commodity yet handled at the port.

With an overall length of 98 m and a beam of 13.7 m, British Shield exceeded the normal maximum vessel dimensions for Silloth dock (90 m by 13.5 m). British Shield’s size made it important for the vessel to arrive during a spring-tide cycle.

Chris Puxley, Harbour Master & Port Superintendent, Port of Silloth, said:

"It was interesting to see such a large vessel being accommodated in the port. This was achieved with good planning, considerable piloting skills and a great deal of luck with the weather. The sight of such a large vessel at the docks created much public interest. Driving into the town, her funnel could be seen towering above the familiar local structures.”

British Shield’s 3,214-tonne cargo was discharged for the Silloth Molasses Terminal – a storage and distribution centre for molasses imports which was opened at the Port of Silloth in October last year.

The largest cargo ever handled at Silloth was a 3,311- tonne shipment of agribulks in February this year
