Passengers and cruises

Brittany Ferries runs ro-ro passenger and freight services from Plymouth to Roscoff in Brittany and Santander in northern Spain, which are popular with passengers and freight forwarders alike. Millbay Docks has a large, modern passenger terminal and extensive vehicle-marshalling areas which speed up the turnaround of vessels and ease the flow of traffic.

Situated within historic Plymouth, Millbay Docks is a popular port of call for cruise liners throughout the year. The port provides modern berthing facilities for cruise vessels, and boasts fully adjustable tender berthing facilities to service ships moored in Plymouth Sound.

The port is only a short walk from the city’s shopping centre and historic attractions. The city overlooks the natural sheltered harbour and anchorages of Plymouth Sound, protected by the Royal Citadel built by Charles II. The scenic Hoe Promenade is where Sir Francis Drake played his famous game of bowls before commanding the English fleet against the Spanish Armada. The Elizabethan Barbican, where many buildings remain little changed since they were constructed in the 16th Century, is home to the Mayflower Steps, from where the Pilgrim Fathers embarked for their departure to the New World in 1620. The area remains home to Plymouth’s fishing fleet and combines the charm of Elizabethan England with modern visitor facilities, including art galleries, shops, restaurants, cafes and waterside pubs. The location is ideally suited for exploring the beautiful coves and inlets of Devon and Cornwall, as well as the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park. In addition, the recently-opened and much acclaimed Eden Project, described as a living theatre of plants and people, makes an excellent day trip from Plymouth.
