General cargo

With 15,000 sq m of covered storage available at three locations within the port and large areas of open storage for non-weather-sensitive cargo, Newport has the expertise, facilities and equipment for handling all types of general and project cargoes and heavy lifts. Types of cargo handled range from locomotives for English Welsh and Scottish Railway and Freightliner to aluminium, ingots and regular consignments of export bridgework. Additionally, specialist facilities are available for the handling of delicate cargoes such as glass. The port is also licensed to handle explosives of Class 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 within the dock with an offshore anchorage available for larger consignments.

Facilities include:

  • A large fleet of lift trucks of up to 42-tonne capacity.
  • Extensive cranage with a heavy lift capacity of up to 45 tonnes.
  • Rail track available adjacent to the quay, saving on double handling for rail projects.
  • A high net explosive quantity licence, saving on the number of separate deliveries required for consignments of explosives.
  • ABP can arrange a cost-effective and competitive total logistics package for general cargo, including delivery and stock control at the terminal.
