Dry Bulks
Dry bulk-handling at the Port of Newport is concentrated on the north side of South Dock. Regular shipments of clay and agribulks are accommodated at a dedicated terminal, which is equipped with two weighbridges, dust-suppression hoppers and specially designed grabs that reduce losses during discharge. Severn Sands operates at an expanded terminal on the port’s South Dock, where regular shipments of sand and decorative aggregates for the construction industry are handled.
Recent investment has created a 3,600 sq m GAFTA-/AIC-approved warehouse for Arkady Animal Feed UK Ltd, the port’s Coal Terminal, the refurbishment of Atlantic Coal Siding and the installation of a rail weighbridge. Agribulk products are also blended and bagged at a facility operated by IAWS.
Forest Products
Newport receives ever-increasing volumes of forest-product shipments from Russia, the Baltic states, Scandinavia, South America and the Far East. Customers benefit from the port’s computerised stock control and value-added services, such as ‘pick-a-pack’, distribution and specialist timber treatment.
In support of the growth in trade, ABP invested £4.6m in new timber-storage facilities for customer Saint-Gobain Building Distribution. Finnforest has also developed new timber-treatment facilities, enhancing the port’s timber-handling capability. Additionally, ABP handles a substantial volume of plywood and board products for a number of port customers, such as Jewsons, Premier Forest Products and RKL, and recently converted a former warehouse for the storage and handling of high-value woodpulp and MDF board.
General Cargo
All types of general, project and heavy-lift cargoes are accommodated at Newport, which has extensive storage, cranage and expertise for fast and efficient handling. Over 25,000 sq m of multi-purpose covered storage is available within the port estate and there are large areas of open storage for non-weather-sensitive cargoes.
Minerals & Ores
The port is experienced in handling bulk-traffic cargoes and regularly handles coal, petroleum coke and coke shipments. The port’s recently upgraded bulk terminal at South Dock can discharge two vessels of up to 40,000 dwt simultaneously.
A direct rail spur into the terminal enables easy loading, minimising handling requirements and reducing the cost of haulage on some cargoes. Coal-washing, screening and blending facilities are also provided within the port estate, in partnership with Hargreaves Industrial Services.
Steel & Other Metals
ABP Dowds Terminal provides over 25,000 sq m of modern, covered storage for the handling of steel imports and exports that also benefit from rail-connected facilities. The terminal offers the latest in real-time, web-based stock control and EDI links, based on a portable scanning system for vessel tallying and warehouse deliveries.
Following a new three-year agreement with Corus, ABP recently provided an electronic-tallying system to record the handling of steel cargoes and relocated two 40-tonne cranes to Newport. The port also developed improved rail access to the steel terminal to support increased steel-export traffic and reduce train-handling times by half.
Sims Group currently operates an 8-ha metals-recycling facility on South Dock, which processes all types of metal. This facility benefited from a £3.5m investment by ABP, following a renewed 20-year agreement with Sims Group, making the facility one of Sims’s flagship operations in the world. Following the success of this operation, ABP invested over £2.2m to extend Sims’s Newport site by a further 5 ha and constructed a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plant, which has the capacity to process in excess of 100,000 tonnes of electrical equipment every year.
