On the north shore of the Severn Estuary, nine miles to the west of Cardiff, the Port of Barry has direct rail connections to the national rail-freight network.

Barry is a major trading port in South Wales, and its main business comes from supporting the area’s chemicals industry. Liquid bulks are handled for, among others, Dow Corning, European Vinyls Corporation (UK) Ltd and Dow Chemicals Ltd, and Vopak offers liquid-bulk storage.

In addition, Barry retains considerable expertise in the handling of steel, timber and bulks including grain, cement, coal and aggregates. Containers are handled by rail at a specialised terminal operated by Samat on behalf of Dow Corning.

Cardiff Stevedoring and Cargo Handling Co. Ltd undertakes the port’s general cargo stevedoring requirements. Newport Stevedores undertakes the handling of grain and cement at Barry.

For companies seeking to expand their operations, or establish new outlets, the port has extensive areas of land available for the development of both port- and non-port-related operations. Industrial or commercial sites are available ranging from 0.2 ha to 8.9 ha.
