Grimsby

Although retaining its strong connection with the fishing and food industry, Grimsby is the UK's major car import terminal and is at the forefront in serving the developing offshore wind energy industry.

Grimsby is located just seven miles from the open sea, on the south bank of the River Humber and within easy reach of the UK's industrial heartland. The M180/A180 dual carriageway runs right to the dock entrance, providing fast links to the M18 and M1. There are also direct quayside rail connections which link the port to the national railway network.

RoRo - cars

• Handles more than 500,000 imported vehicles each year

• Traffic is handled at two dedicated roro berths in Alexandra Dock, backed by a modern and efficient terminal offering pre-delivery inspection and accessory-fitting services

• The Grimsby Riverside Terminal - a new £25 million investment to develop a two-berth facility capable of handling vessels carrying up to 3,000 vehicles - is being constructed for completion in 2013 

Offshore wind

• An established centre of excellence for operations and maintenance activities for Round 1 and 2 wind farms in the North Sea

• Offers a number of sites suitable for the development of the O&M industry, as well as other offshore wind-associated activities

• Centrica, Siemens and RES have established operations within the port  

Fresh produce and perishables

• The modern fish market, operated by Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises Ltd, is recognised as one of the most important fish markets in Europe and handles some 20,000 tonnes of fresh fish each year

• Frozen fish is also discharged at the Royal Dock 

Dry bulks

• Handles a variety of agribulk products, including grain exports and fertiliser imports

• Over 100,000 tonnes of cement is shipped each year in specialist coastal bulk vessels 

Forest products

• A modern timber-treatment facility

• A wide range of timber products including construction, garden, and panel products, are imported

• Regular services from Scandinavia and The Baltic States 

General cargo, minerals and ores, steel and other metals

• Handles minerals and ores as well as general cargo such as non-ferrous metals, iron and steel 

Key statistics and berthing information

• Handles around 1 million tonnes each year

• Circa 550 total port acreage
